It was during a trip overseas in January 1998 when we first sank our teeth into an unimaginably delicious snack – a Hand-Rolled Soft Pretzel! Back in Australia we decided that all Australians should have the opportunity to taste this amazing product. Pretzel World – 100 % Australian Pretzel Company! The image of Pretzel World is everything to us, we wanted our stores to look fresh, fun and ultra hip, the most important thing is that it be inviting for everyone from all walks of life. After spending a lot of time researching the product, the flavors, toppings, locations, and image, in October 2000 Pretzel World was started and the first store opened at Hurstville followed soon thereafter at Miranda. The Pretzel History In 1510 somewhere in Italy, Italian monks took leftover bread-dough scraps, rolled them into shapes to resemble hands in prayer and baked them to golden brown. They called them pretiolas or “little rewards” and gave them to their most devoted students. From Italy the pretiola made its way over the Alps into Austria and Germany where over time the pretiola became known as the pretzel. The pretzels shape became a symbol of good luck and many believed the shape was also a symbol of long life and good health. Today we call that discovery ‘PRETZEL’ which means A Great Snack in Any Language! Baker’s Emblem A significant moment in the pretzels history occurred in the year 1610AD when the Turks were besieging Vienna. Unable to take the city in the conventional manner of storming the walls, the Turks were forced to re-think their strategy. The Turks decided that tunnelling under the City walls at night would surprise the enemy and claim victory. Shift after shift of soldiers worked drilling and moving dirt under the cover of darkness. Fortunately for the Viennese there were people awake at night in the city baking pretzels for the next day. Hearing the noises coming from outside and under the walls and discovering the Turks tactics they assembled all the pretzel bakers and attacked the Turks in their own tunnels and beat them back. For this show of heroics the king bestowed on the Pretzel Bakers a coat of arms showing a shield against a rampant lion and the form of a pretzel in the midst of a shield. This became the baker’s emblem and its still used to this day. Romance Pretzels also hold an honoured place in the marriage ceremony in European culture. A wood cut dated 1614 and copied from a stained glass window in a Cathedral at Berne, Switzerland, depicts the Pretzel used as a the nuptial knot in a marriage ceremony between royal families. From then on wishing on a pretzel became common, particularly at marriages. At the alter the bride and groom pulled on the pretzel and the one that ended up with the larger piece would have there wish come true. Pretzels trip around the World From Europe the pretzel found its way to America in the eighteenth century. Some say on the Mayflower, although this has never been substantiated. History says a homeless man travelling through Lititz, Pennsylvania gave up the pretzel recipe to a baker for a meal. The bakers apprentice Julius Sturgis, as the story goes, used the recipe to make pretzels. He is now known as the founder of the first commercial pretzel bakery in the United States. As they say the rest is history. Today there are over 3,000 pretzel outlets across North America and growing. There are also pretzel outlets in Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Philippines, Taiwan, Korea and now Australia. Annual pretzel sales top $180 million in North America and are the second most popular snack, right behind potato chips and just in front of popcorn*. The pretzel business is worth $1.27 billion in North America.
